Qashqai is the most popular Nissan crossover, positioned between Juke and X-Trail. Unfortunately, it is not available in the US. If we have to find its sibling across the ocean, it would be the new Rogue Sport. According to reports, there will be big changes in the upcoming season and the 2021 Nissan Qashqai could suffer the most modifications. By launching the Ariya concept, the carmaker made its future clear – Nissan will build more electric vehicles.
Well, we expected a hybrid version of the 2021 Nissan Qashqai. But, the latest reports say the crossover is going all-electric. There are other rumors as well, regarding the redesign. Again, the new platform presented some interesting ideas, and the architecture best suits the Qashqai crossover. The size will remain the same, and the company is also redesigning the X-Trail.
Hybrid Engine and All-Electric Qashqai
We can see it coming. Major competitors are already offering hybrid setups. Toyota and Honda launched these versions of Rav4 and CR-V in Europe before they arrived in the USA. Nissan is a bit late, but the Qashqai still has a lot to offer with six drivetrains total. Still, the next move should be hybridizing the compact crossover.
Well, the new Ariya concept came at the right time. It offers a better layout for electric batteries and represents the future of compact SUVs. Nissan is going to electrify a lot of vehicles for the 2021 season and Qashqai is one of the priorities, especially after sales dropped in 2019. In 2020 the company makes a break and we won’t see too many new models. But, in the following season, the Japanese manufacturer is going to raid the market in all segments.
Besides the hybrid setup, the new platform is also capable of carrying the all-electric drivetrain. It is a logical choice since Nissan took a lot of critics for its inactivity. After Leaf, which is still the best-selling all-electric car in history, the manufacturer didn’t deliver any other EV. Now, it is time to strike in the most popular class nowadays.
What is Ariya Concept?
When the Ariya stepped into a stage for the first time, it was clear it represents the near future of Nissan’s compact crossovers. The vehicle was not one of these far-fetched ideas, and it looked like the production can start immediately. Well, the company is promising advanced features in the self-driving sector, but that is nothing new.
The concept brings the fresh design language, which will underpin the 2021 Nissan Qashqai, Rogue, Kicks, and other small models. In the larger classes, there is a new Infiniti Monograph platform with some attractive styling solutions. The highlights of this concept are the new grille, replacing the old V-Motion design, and thin headlamps. What’s more, the Ariya offers an Intelligent Mobility system of the latest generation. It includes a reduction of gas emissions, as well as smart driver-aid technologies.
2021 Nissan Qashqai Redesign
So, the Ariya concept will underpin the new crossover. But, this is the platform for electric vehicles, and the question is what will 2021 Nissan Qashqai look like with conventional drivetrains. Well, the vehicle is going to adopt some of the new languages, but the entire Ariya architecture is impossible to adapt for standard engines.
Qashqai definitely needs a refresh. The small crossover dates back to 2013 and it received a facelift in 2017. All its rivals are newer, so the crossover needs to catch up. Well, last year the company updated the engine room with the new powerplant. Now, it is time for cosmetic make-up.
2021 Nissan Qashqai Engines and Specs
There are six different choices the current Qashqai could offer to its buyers. Well, not all of them are available in the same market. The newest addition to the lineup is a 1.3-liter petrol unit. Of course, the company is not going to discontinue it only a year after the debut. The powerplant delivers 160 hp and 160 lb-ft of torque. The crossover with such outputs needs 10 seconds to reach 60 mph from zero.
Qashqai kept an old 1.2-liter model as the entry-level offer. It won’t stun you with its performance (115 hp, 140 lb-ft), but the mill is pretty fuel-friendly. There are also two larger displacements. Qashqai with a 1.6-liter is the fastest one (0-60 mph in 9 seconds), while the largest motor is a 2.0.
A couple of diesel units are also part of the lineup. The offer starts with a 1.5-liter dCi and 110 hp + 190 lb-ft. The more potent engine is a slightly larger 1.6 four-pot with 130 hp and 240 pound-feet of twisting power.
2021 Nissan Qashqai Release Date
With so many updates by Nissan on the way, we cannot say exactly when the company plans to launch the new Qashqai. The Ariya concept debuted at Tokyo Auto Show, and its first production model could choose the same place for the premiere.
